Winterbourne House and the Barber Institute
April 19th 2023
Winterbourne House restored to its Edwardian Arts and Crafts splendour is set within seven acres of beautiful gardens containing over six thousand plant species from around the world.
The Barber Institute of Fine Arts was founded in 1932 by Dame Martha Constance Barber in memory of her husband and is housed in a Grade1 listed Art Deco building designed by Robert Atkinson. It features many of the greatest names in Western art and holds an internationally significant collection assembled over the 20th century.

We travelled to Winterbourne the Arts and Crafts House in Edgbaston where the head gardener gave us a very interesting tour of the gardens and greenhouses, with time afterwards to enjoy the beautiful house.
We then walked the short distance to the Barber Institute of Fine Arts. This is an elegant Art Deco building housing a fine collection of paintings, sculpture, and ancient coins, many of international importance. Both visits were thoroughly
enjoyable and our thanks go to Sue James for organising them.
