study day 2022
Monday 21st March
Pox and Pestilence & medical gold with medical Antiques roadshow surprise!
We enjoyed a very interesting day with Dr James Grant, a retired country doctor with a lifetime of experience working in the NHS both in hospital and in rural practice.
The first lecture explored how artists have tackled difficult themes relating to epidemic infectious diseases over the centuries. It showed us how we respond to the fear of the unknown, of disability and death, recognising how artists can be remarkably positive amidst suffering.
The second talk illustrated 4000 years of the history of gold in medicine. It showed how artists, goldsmiths and instrument makers have defined medicine’s relationship with the most coveted of all the elements, with the ultimate ‘medical gold’ being the Nobel Prize.
After lunch we tried our hands at identifying objects and guessing their value on the ' Medical Antiques Roadshow Surprise!' The items ranged from a simple bleeding bowl to an early vaccination kit.
Altogether a very entertaining day.
Many thanks to everyone who helped but especially to the Study Day organisers Gill Williams and Caroline Munro.
